Election of right-wing Doncaster mayor and BNP’s European election results prompt return to UK from Canada by Doncaster-born filmmaker and writer

----

Jay Baker – writer, director, producer of the documentary “Escape from Doncatraz” (about the threat of the BNP on an island of controlled borders under a surveillance state) and author of “Soon To Be Banned: Musings of a Media Activist” (a compilation of the media activist’s thought-provoking and hilarious commentaries from the past six years) – has recently returned to Britain from Canada, where he spent the last few years helping many causes, speaking at universities and conferences, and launching an alternative media company, and is shocked to learn that his hometown has recently elected a right-wing mayor.

Baker has responded by announcing that he plans to remain in the region for a while and will follow up by launching SilenceBreaker Media here to assist in Doncaster’s regeneration by offering jobs and workshops for unemployed young people in the town, as well as by making a follow-up to his film.

“I made Escape from Doncatraz, and escaped from Doncaster, but now I feel like I left a sinking ship,” Baker states. “As a native Doncastrian, I feel it is my duty to personally confront the mayor and address these issues using the tools I know best – after all, my camera shoots fascists.”

Baker, who has left a marriage behind in Canada to come back to Britain, calls on all artists and activists in the area to join him in the cause, and plans to devote time to the town’s Pride festival, which has been threatened with budget cuts under the mayor’s new agenda.

There'll come a time in the future when I shan't mind about this anymore; I can look back and say quite peacefully and cheerfully how silly I was. No, no I don't want that time to come either. I want to remember every minute, always, always to the end of my days." - Brief Encounter
